Burnt Ember - Bastogne Walnut Executive Desk

This executive desk built from a single slab of Bastogne walnut that survived a fire. The tree stood in the Pacific Northwest for eighty to a hundred years, and somewhere in that life a fire reached it — close enough to scar it, not close enough to take it down. The char still runs along the crook of the wood, dark and permanent: a record of what the tree lived through before it ever met a saw.

Meet the Maker - featured on MakerBook

At Black Walnut Studio, LLC, I build one-of-a-kind live-edge furniture from Pacific Northwest hardwoods — Bastogne, Claro, and Oregon black walnut. Because out there, the trees grow bigger, and the weight presses figure into the wood: fiddleback, marbling, color that shifts in the light. Most people have never seen wood like this.

I look for the slabs with character — wild grain, a crack, a live edge — and build the whole piece around it, so it becomes the quiet focal point of the room. A desk, a dining table, a conference table, made once and built to outlast its owner.

That’s what I mean by functional art. Tell me about your space — that’s where every piece begins.
