At Black Walnut Studio, LLC, every custom piece begins with a conversation—and ends with a one-of-a-kind heirloom that feels right at home.

We believe that when you're part of the process, the piece becomes more than furniture—it becomes a reflection of your story. From the first sketch to the final coat of finish, we work closely with you to shape something deeply personal and enduring.

Step 1: Collaborative Design

Whether you come to us with a clear vision or just a feeling you want to capture, we’ll walk you through every design choice. Together, we’ll dial in dimensions, function, and form—everything from overall proportions to details like leg style, edge profile, and optional resin elements.

Step 2: Material Selection

This is where the soul of the piece begins. We’ll review options together—native hardwoods, live edge slabs, epoxy resin colors, and base styles. You’ll help choose the lumber, and we’ll hand-select every board for its grain, tone, and natural character. If it doesn’t feel right, it doesn’t make the cut.

Step 3: Remote Collaboration

Once the slab is in the shop, we’ll reconnect to review it together—virtually or in person. We’ll mark out the best areas of grain, knots, or curves to feature. Every piece of wood has a story to tell; our job is to help it speak clearly, with your input guiding the voice.

Step 4: Craftsmanship and Finish

The build process is slow and deliberate. We treat every piece as if it were going into our own home. No shortcuts, no compromises—just meticulous joinery, attention to detail, and an uncompromising approach to finishing. Whether it’s a natural oil or a durable hardwax, the final surface will feel as good as it looks.

Step 5: Final Delivery

The result is a piece that’s not only structurally sound, but emotionally resonant—built with pride, and designed to reflect the individuality of the wood and the person it was made for.
